3D Scanning & Part Reproduction

Have a physical part, but no CAD file? HOGG3D can capture its shape, recreate the design and help turn it into a usable replacement or a new component. Based in Rockhampton, Central Queensland, we focus on automotive, civil, mining, workshop and industrial applications.

Whether you need scan data for your own project, a CAD model, or a finished part, we can quote the stages you need.

From existing part to digital design

  • Part reproduction: recreate discontinued, damaged or difficult-to-source components.
  • Design around existing geometry: develop brackets, mounts, housings and accessories to suit a vehicle, machine or assembly.
  • Reverse engineering: use measured geometry as the starting point for a CAD model, with agreed changes to fit, features or mounting points.
  • Scan-only supply: receive scan files for your own design, reference or further processing.
  • Prototypes and production: check fit before committing to a finished part or a small production run.

Our scanning equipment

We use a SHINING 3D EinScan Rigil, combining blue-laser and infrared scanning with standalone, wireless PC and wired PC operation.

The current Rigil platform supports 50 crossed blue-laser lines for broad capture and 7 parallel laser lines for finer detail. Laser HD mode offers geometric resolution down to 0.05 mm, with manufacturer-stated volumetric accuracy up to 0.04 + 0.06 mm/m under specified conditions. These are scanner specifications, rather than a guaranteed tolerance for a reconstructed or printed part.

Current EXScan Rigil software adds texture capture in IR and laser modes, texture-assisted marker-free laser alignment and LAS point-cloud export. We select the capture method and settings to suit the job; markers or surface preparation may still be needed.

Access, surface finish and geometry affect what can be captured. Deep recesses, hidden faces and transparent surfaces may need additional preparation, measurement or reconstruction. Tell us about critical fits and dimensions before scanning.

Scanning, mesh processing & CAD

Our main workflow combines Rigil / EXScan Rigil software, Autodesk Meshmixer and Autodesk Fusion (Fusion 360).

  1. Capture: scan the original part or surrounding geometry.
  2. Prepare: align the data, remove unwanted geometry and clean up the mesh as required.
  3. Reconstruct: use Fusion 360 to build CAD geometry, restore agreed missing features or make design changes.
  4. Produce: prepare files for printing or another agreed manufacturing process, with a fit-check prototype where appropriate.

A scan is a record of the surface, not automatically an editable CAD model. Raw scan supply, mesh cleanup and CAD reconstruction are separate deliverables. We’ll agree the scope before work begins. If the original is worn or broken, reference dimensions, mating parts or an undamaged example can help establish the intended shape.

Traditional measurement still has its place

For smaller or simpler parts, direct measurement can be the most practical approach. We also work with vernier calipers, steel rulers, angle gauges and other measuring tools, alongside hand sketches, traced profiles and scanned paper templates.

We can combine these methods with 3D scanning, or model a part directly from measurements. Scanning paper sketches or templates provides a useful design reference; important dimensions are checked and the reference scaled before modelling.

Scan files & delivery formats

We can supply scan data without CAD reconstruction, or quote cleaned meshes and reconstructed CAD separately. Tell us which software you’ll use and what you need to do with the files.

Deliverable Available formats
Surface mesh STL, OBJ, PLY, 3MF
Point-cloud data ASC (optimised whole-scan point cloud), LAS
Global marker data P3, where captured and applicable
OBJ texture companion files JPG texture image and MTL material file, where texture is captured and exported

These cover the documented Rigil / EXScan Rigil export options, including LAS added in the latest release. Available data depends on the capture mode, processing stage and software configuration. “Raw scan data” means scan-only point-cloud or mesh deliverables, rather than a rebuilt CAD model; some exports require alignment, optimisation or meshing.

Need STEP / STP? We can quote CAD reconstruction and STEP supply separately where suitable. STEP is a CAD deliverable from the modelling stage, not a direct Rigil scan export.

In-house printing & specialist manufacturing

Our in-house additive manufacturing uses Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), also known as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), on Bambu Lab H2S and H2D machines. View our 3D Print Service for build sizes and file requirements.

Where another process is better suited, we can source specialist plastic and metal additive manufacturing through external suppliers. Options to assess include:

  • Stereolithography (SLA): resin printing for fine detail and surface finish.
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS): polymer powder-bed printing for functional parts.
  • Multi Jet Fusion (MJF): polymer powder-bed printing for functional components and batches.
  • Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF): metal additive manufacturing, including processes commonly described as Selective Laser Melting (SLM) or DMLS.

These specialist processes are externally sourced. Material, alloy, tolerances, finishing, supplier availability, price and lead time are confirmed for each project.

What to send for a quote

  • Photos of the part from several angles, with a ruler or known dimension for scale.
  • Approximate size, part condition and details of any missing or damaged areas.
  • Its intended use, operating conditions and critical fit requirements.
  • The outcome required: scan files, cleaned mesh, CAD model, finished parts, or a combination.
  • Preferred file formats, quantity, deadline and location or delivery postcode.

We’ll review the job and discuss access to the original part, the best capture method and the proposed deliverables before quoting.
